Scrum Cap Sizing Guide: How to Measure for the Perfect Fit

Why Getting the Size Right Matters

A scrum cap that doesn't fit properly won't protect you. Too loose and it shifts on impact, exposing your ears and temples. Too tight and it distracts you from your game. Getting the right size is the single most important step when buying rugby headgear.

How to Measure Your Head

  1. Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head, just above your eyebrows at the front and around the widest point of the skull at the back.
  2. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
  3. Note the measurement in centimetres.

Then refer to our Collide Sport scrum cap sizing chart to find your size.

General Sizing Reference

52-54 cm = Small | 54-57 cm = Medium | 57-60 cm = Large | 60-63 cm = XL. Note: always check the specific product's size guide on the Collide Sport scrum cap range page, as sizes can vary by model.

Fit Test: How It Should Feel

  • Front edge sits 1-2 cm above the eyebrows.
  • Ear guards fully cover both ears without gaping.
  • Shake your head firmly — the cap moves with you, not independently.
  • Snug but no pinching or pressure headaches.
  • Chin strap (if present) sits comfortably without restricting jaw movement.

Between Sizes?

If your measurement falls on the border, try the smaller size first for a more secure fit. If it causes discomfort, size up. Snug is correct — tight is not.

Kids vs Adults

Junior players typically measure 50-55 cm, but this varies significantly. Always measure rather than guessing by age. Read our guide on scrum caps for kids vs adults for more.
